Anxiety is a normal human emotion that helps give us information, motivate us to action and communicate to other people in our lives. It normally is present when we have an upcoming event, a change, or something with an uncertain outcome. It pops up, and then settles down.

That is different than how excessive worry and fear creates suffering and gets in the way of living the life you want.

Meet your Dallas anxiety therapist

Hi! I’m Michelle Spurgeon, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Supervisor who helps you navigate anxiety with compassion and research-backed therapy.

Even if you’re able to keep meeting life’s demands, there is a lot of suffering with anxiety. You don’t have to figure this out alone whether your anxiety comes from high expectations, chronic burnout, relational stress, trauma, or something else.

Therapy will help build up your coping strategies, but you also have the chance to look deeper at what fuels anxiety for you. You can feel more connected to yourself, calmer, safe in your healthy relationships, and brave to move into your future. Therapy can support you in feeling this.

  • Many anxiety treatments focus on managing symptoms with challenging thoughts or practicing coping skills. We will make sure you know how to manage experiences of anxiety, but we won't stop there.

You will have tailored coping skills that work to reduce your vulnerability to anxiety, cope with anxiety starts up, and soothe your body and mind at some of the hardest times of the day with your anxiety.

I use research-backed coping strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to combine “thinking skills” and strategies that soothe the physical experience of anxiety. This goes beyond “deep breathing".

While those tools can be helpful, they don’t always address the underlying causes of anxiety. In anxiety therapy with me, we look at what may be driving anxiety beneath the surface including past experiences, chronic stress patterns, or nervous system overwhelm. I integrate trauma-informed therapy and EMDR therapy to help the brain and body process the root of anxiety, not just manage it.

  • Yes. I provide EMDR therapy for anxiety for teens and adults in Dallas and throughout Texas, Florida, Louisiana or Virginia via telehealth.

It’s particularly helpful in helping the brain move out of hypervigilance or hyperarousal and into a state of rest. It has been helpful in reducing social anxiety, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Unspecified Anxiety, or Panic Disorder. It is also helpful for anxiety that may co-occur for trauma survivors, those with ADHD or Autism, or substance use disorder.

For folks who meet the demands regardless of how they feel, or who are caregivers- EMDR can be a great asset in treating anxiety.

  • Yes. Therapy (including EMDR) can be effective for chronic mental looping.

Overthinking often persists because the brain hasn’t fully processed earlier experiences tied to fear, responsibility, or self-doubt. EMDR helps the brain resolve those stored memories so thoughts no longer get stuck on repeat.

    Clients often notice:

    • quieter mental space

    • less compulsive analysis

    • easier decision-making

    • reduced self-criticism

  • This is incredibly common among high-achieving professionals.

Many clients I work with are competent, insightful, and outwardly successful yet internally feel:

    • constant pressure

    • overresponsibility

    • fear of letting people down

    • inability to relax

Often this pattern develops from earlier environments where performance, safety, or approval felt linked. Anxiety becomes less about current life and more about learned survival patterns. Therapy focuses on helping your nervous system update those patterns so success no longer requires anxiety.

  • Yes. I offer anxiety therapy intensives in Dallas and virtually across Texas, Florida, Louisiana, & Virginia.

Intensives are extended sessions (often 2–4 hours or multi-day) that allow us to:

    • work more deeply without weekly interruptions

    • process anxiety triggers faster

    • reduce long-standing patterns

    • create meaningful shifts in a shorter timeframe

Many professionals prefer intensives because they fit busy schedules while accelerating progress. I also offer therapy intensives for anxiety for therapists.

  • My goal is to help you understand your anxiety, know how to care for yourself, and reduce or alleviate your anxiety. Sometimes medication is a necessary or helpful tool to combine with therapy. However, medication isn’t always needed for clients. You, your therapist, and/or medical provider will discuss if a combination of therapy and medication management of anxiety seems helpful.

  • My fee for service is $225 per 50-minute-session. Extended sessions are offered with a different fee schedule.

I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. Many of the clients I work with choose private-pay therapy intentionally because it allows for a more personalized, flexible, and confidential therapy experience — especially when working on anxiety rooted in deeper patterns or past experiences.

While I don’t participate in insurance panels, I partner with Thrizer to check your out-of-network benefits. I can provide a superbill upon request that you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan. Thrizer can also handle submitting your out-of-network billing if preferred.
